Home » Grandparenting: finding the fun

‘There is something really special when you are in a crowd and they pick you out. That to me is the most special thing. Like, they might be upset, but they’ll come to you because you are Nana’.

Over the decades, the role of grandparents has changed. Today, more grandparents are taking up the role of helping to raise their grandchildren in a complex and busy world. But there’s also some beautiful blessings in being a grandparent. In this episode, Tania talks with Julie, an educator in parenting, about the joys and challenges of being a grandparent.

Key takeaways from this episode

  • Grandparenting brings joy, connection, and exhaustion. Julie and her husband cherish time with their grandkids, from noisy play cafés to quiet snuggles, but admit it can be physically tiring—yet deeply rewarding.
  • Fun is found in the simple, shared moments. Julie creates memories through little traditions like “Nana ice blocks,” and Tania loves outings and bedtime stories. It’s the presence, not the presents, that matter most.
  • Parenting styles have evolved—curiosity is key. Julie highlights a shift to gentler, more intentional parenting. As a grandparent, being curious and supportive—rather than judgemental—helps maintain harmony and builds trust.
  • Boundaries set with love build safety and respect. Using positive phrases like “In our house, we sit on the couch” instead of “Don’t jump” helps children learn limits in a nurturing way.
  • Support your adult children first. Grandparenting is easier and more fun when your own kids are supported. Noticing their needs—like rest or a break—leads to a healthier dynamic for everyone.
  • Faith and community make a difference. Julie finds strength in the truth that “God is faithful” and encourages grandparents to find or be a village of support, especially in complex or vulnerable family situations.
