Sophie’s personal journey inspires her work. Growing up during political unrest in Ethiopia, Sophie became a refugee in Canada, later returning to humanitarian work through the Lutheran World Federation (LWF).
Ethiopia faces severe ongoing challenges. The country struggles with recurring droughts, food insecurity, and large-scale displacement due to conflict and natural disasters, hosting around 1 million refugees and 4.5 million internally displaced people.
LWF focuses on sustainable, practical solutions. Initiatives include gravity-fed irrigation schemes for farmers and empowering women through livestock programs, which create lasting benefits that “keep on giving”.
Stories of resilience bring hope. Sophie shared the story of Siye, a displaced man who became a respected community leader in a refugee camp, later reuniting with his wife and starting a family.
Small acts of kindness have a huge impact. Donor support helps transform lives, especially for women and children, demonstrating how generosity from afar brings hope in dark times.
Australians can help through donations, prayer, and advocacy. Financial gifts, especially cash donations, provide vital resources while supporting local economies. Advocacy for peace and international aid is also crucial.
Faith drives the work. Sophie sees humanitarian aid as “faith in action,” serving vulnerable people as Jesus did, and witnessing their unshaken faith and resilience despite hardship.
