Christmas is about being seen. Pastor James Winderlich tells the story of a struggling family who, despite their own hardships, stopped in the rain to help a lonely hitchhiker. Their act of kindness mirrors God’s mindfulness—seeing people fully, not overlooking them.
Mary’s song points to God’s mindfulness. Instead of fear or dread at her unexpected pregnancy, Mary praised God, celebrating that He had been mindful of her humble state. God saw her, valued her, and was actively at work in her life.
True mindfulness is outward, not inward. While modern mindfulness often focuses on self-awareness, God’s mindfulness is directed towards us. He sees us in our fullness, in joy and in struggle, and moves towards us with love.
Christmas is God’s act of stopping for us. Just as the family stopped for the hitchhiker, Christmas is God seeing us in our need and stepping into our world through Jesus.
Immanuel—God with us. The birth of Jesus assures us that God is with us personally, that He notices us when others may not, and that His presence is a source of comfort and hope.
