Five months before I was born, my father committed suicide. My mother, wanting to honour him, gave me his name even though I was the third daughter. Our family never talked about his suicide, and I didn’t learn the truth about how he died until I was in my 30s. I grew up believing he had died of a heart attack at the young age of 33.
